Oral & Maxillofacial surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is surgical procedure to treat, injuries and defects in the hard and soft tissues of the mouth and maxillofacial region including the jaws and face. Since the mouth and jaws contain different types of tissues they are prone to develop abnormal growth. The surgeons diagnose and treat cysts and tumors that develop in the oral cavity. Many factors contribute to development of tumors in the maxillofacial region such as poor oral hygiene, ill fitted dentures etc. However, the people who are addicted to tobacco and alcohol are the ones most likely to develop such abnormalities.

Oral cancer diagnosis

Oral cancer can occur anywhere in the oral cavity. It begins in the tongue and the mouth floors and spreads to the lymphatic system and infects other regions as well. Although oral cancer is not contagious, in our country almost 60% of the population who are addicted to tobacco in one form or the other is likely to develop oral cancer at some stage. The use of tobacco along with alcohol almost doubles the chances for getting oral cancer. Sometimes over exposure to sun may also cause oral cancer in some patients. The patients who had surgeries in the head and neck region are also at risk of developing oral cancer.

Oral cancer is characterized by the following symptoms:

  • White or red colored patches in the mouth and lips
  • Unhealed sores in throat or lip areas.
  • Formation of lumps in neck
  • Bleeding and loose teeth

If you have any of the following symptoms, it is better for you to consult a doctor immediately to get it diagnosed and treated at the earliest. However, presence of an infection in the mouth may also cause the same symptoms which proper diagnosis is vital. A biopsy is the best possible way to determine the presence of cancer cells in the tissue.

Treatments

The cancerous tissue is surgically removed in most of the cases. And sophisticated complex surgical procedures like maxillectomy, radial dissection of neck etc will have to be done. However, in case of inoperable tumors, radiation therapy coupled with chemotherapy will have to be employed. Biological processes like nutrition and hydration for the patient are facilitated by feeding tubes. After the removal of the tissues, a reconstructive surgery may be required. Depending on the precise site of infection, survival rates for oral cancer may vary. Early detection is the only possible way to ensure increased survival outcomes. After treatment, proper rehabilitation is required.
